ADPATEC LAUNCHES ULTRASCSI CONTROLLER, ADAPTOR

By CBR Staff Writer

Although most companies agree that UltraSCSI will soon be outpaced as the standard input-output interface, there is still a lot of interest in it and Milpitas, California-based Adaptec Inc has introduced its first high-bandwidth UltraSCSI hard disk controller, the AIC-8325, and the AHA-2940 Ultra Wide, an UltraSCSI host adaptor. The controller supports and controls data transfer at rates of 15M-bystes per second from the drive’s recording medium and 40Mbps from the UltraSCSI bus. It has an automated buffer manager and a low command overhead SCSI command processor, which offload cycles from the microprocessor to the AIC-8325, resulting in high data transfer rates and high input-output per second. The enhanced Error Correction Code can correct up to two error bursts on the fly and there is also a programmable interrupt that assists in implementing Self-Monitoring, Analysis and Reporting Technology. The AIC-8325 is sampling now for $25 a unit. The AHA-2940 Ultra Wide adaptor speeds data exchange between SCSI peripherals and the PCI system at speeds of up to 40Mbps. It can also support the mixing of 8bit and 16bit devices, Narrow and Wide, respectively, on the same SCSI cable. It comes with automatic termination and SCSI Configuration Auto Magically, SCAM 1, which makes the addition and identification of existing SCSI peripherals simple, said the company. The company is offering the AHA-2940 Ultra Wide in a kit, the PCI Ultra Wide SCSI Master, costing $375, which includes the host adaptor; installation software; software drivers; SCSI application utilities like tape back-up, power management and so on.
