Characterising the announcement by Apple Computer Inc and Microsoft Corp that they are collaborating on type fonts as the biggest bunch of garbage and mumbo jumbo it has ever heard, Adobe Systems Inc announced that it will concede and plans to publish the complete specifications for PostScript language Type 1 format fonts in the first quarter of next year: up to now, Adobe has licensed tools to major type foundries for developing Type 1 format font software, but retained the specifications as its own, and the move Adobe’s entire PostScript strategy an open technology, but the alternative was to see its whole business vanish; the announcement was made during the opening session of the Seybold Computer Publishing Conference and Exhibition, being held in San Francisco.
