Menlo Park, California-based Addstor Inc has announced SuperStor PRO, an enhanced version of its SuperStor Version 2 data compression software for increasing disk capacity on personal computers: the SuperStor PRO includes a Windows-based JPEG image compression utility from Optibase Inc and has password protection, increased performance over SuperStor Version 2, an integral disk cache, compatibility with extended memory and enhancements to Addstor’s proprietary Universal Data Exchange technology; the compression technology provides an average two-fold increase in disk-capacity by removing redundancy in programs and data, and once installed, the program is invisible to the user and applications, compressing data automatically as it is stored and decompressing it when it is retrieved; compression and decompression occur in real-time at the record level; the utility provides access to the most often used utility functions from within Windows, including a disk tune-up analyser, disk information display, file and disk compression statistics, disk mount or dismount and floppy disk preparation; the company claims that 8-bit, 16-bit or 24-bit colour and grey scale images van be compressed an average of 20-to-1 with no loss of image quality; the Universal Data Exchange technology supports removable magnetic media and magneto-optical disks and enables compressed disks to be read by any MS-DOS-based personal computer; the product costs $150 and Addstor has cut SuperStor version 2 to $100.
