Milpitas, California-based Adaptec Inc has an addition to its AMM-1570 family of host adaptors in the form of the AudioEdge. This is effectively a subset of the SCSI AudioMachine announced in March (CI No 2,378) at a lower price point. It has the same audio architecture but does not include a microphone. It combines SCSI-2 and 16-bit advanced audio into a single add-in board for AT bus computers. It is limited to internal SCSI communications whereas AudioMachine offers both internal and external SCSI communications. It features integrated on-board signal processing, Wave Table Synthesis and FM-Synthesis along with Windows Sound System Software 2.0. In-built is Adaptec EZ-SCSI 3.0, claimed to configure SCSI peripherals attached to the board in a matter of minutes and EZ-Audio automatically installs the Microsoft Sound System. It also has DeMucker software that cleans up the remnants of previously installed sound board software. The AudioMachine costs $400, the AudioEdge is $300, now.
