DEC has incurred the ire of the third party database software fraternity by its decision to bundle the Rdb relational database with release 5.1 and up of the VMS operating system. According to Computer Systems News, Oracle Corp and Software AG of North America were vociferous in their opposition at the ADAPSO spring conference in San Diego, saying that the practice constitutes unfair competition, and that DEC is trying to undercut the competition from third parties. DEC said it would reply to the complaints in writing; ADAPSO – the Association of Data Processing Service Organisations – is taking the issue to the US Justice Department and the Competition Policy directorate of the European Community Commission.
