Actel Computers Ltd, based appropriately enough in Silverstone, Northamptonshire, has developed a lap timing system called Acteltime: commissioned by the Epson-sponsored Camel Team Lotus for Epson’s PX-4+ laptop computer, the system can computes car speeds of up to 1,000 miles per hour using two light beams from which it measures distance and time figures between each beam break, as well as giving the exact position of each car, the best lap time to date, current lap times and all the laptimes for an individual competitor; the Acteltime system, including the laptop computer with item keyboard, internal stopwatch, and internal printer costs UKP1,500, while the infrared sender and receiver units sell for UKP86 and UKP155 respectively.
