Acronis today announced the release of Acronis Storage, its new software-defined storage solution for archiving large volumes of data in the cloud.
Users with petabytes of data can now stream to the storage system, with data volumes predicted to grow globally 50 times over by the year 2020 to reach 6.6 zetabytes, according to IDC, 40% of which will be stored in the cloud.
Acronis claims its archiving and backup storage offers better performance at a significantly lower cost than large cloud providers like Amazon.
"As the lines between hardware, software and the cloud become increasingly blurred, Acronis Storage exploits innovative new software-defined storage capabilities that change the economics," said Laura DuBois, program vice president for IDC’s storagesystems, software and solutions research offerings.
"The new offering from Acronis enables highly reliable cloud-based back-up solutions using much less costly storage infrastructure."
The offering comes after co-founder Serguei Beloussov returned as CEO, signaling a move into the software-defined storage market.
