Remember the story that we ran in issue No 2,391 about Acer Inc building motherboards with PowerPC/Pentium swappable processor boards? A good story, but apparently untrue. UK marketing manager David Tanner says that we misunderstood his original comments. Yes, Acer is producing machines based upon a flexible bus structure that enables different processors to be plugged in. Yes, it would be very easy to plug in PowerPC boards. But no, Acer is not following the PowerPC path at the moment. And when Tanner said that PowerPC-based machines would be PowerPC Reference Platform-compliant he was merely saying that any PowerPC machines from Acer in the future would be PReP compliant and didn’t mean to imply that Acer was actually building PReP-compliant machines now. So now you know.
