Acer Inc has beaten off a stiff challenge from rival Taiwanese computer manufacturers to win a $940m order from Dell Computer Corp, the first it has won from the US company, according to reports in the local media. The reports said the first shipment is scheduled for the first quarter of next year. Acer president Simon Lin declined to confirm the order, saying only: Both sides are negotiating and no other details are available.

Acer has also strengthened its partnership with IBM, its largest customer, by signing an exclusive general agency agreement to market IBM-developed Chinese-language software to business and individual users in Taiwan. The agreement also includes the purchase of $150m worth of IBM developed enterprise resource planning software for Acer’s internal use.
