Acer Inc has revealed it has started building a computer manufacturing plant in Mexico, forming its ninth such operation overseas. Acer will spend $20m on the plant that is expected to be completed some point next year, and it will produce a 100,000 personal computers a month. The Taiwanese company intends the new facility to support its other plants in El Paso, Texas and San Jose, California. The plant, Acer’s second in Mexico will be based in Juarez and when it is up and running will produce notebook PCs, motherboards, PC cases and consumer electronic products. According to Acer, it is building the new plant in order to keep up with the demand for build-to-order PCs and declares it is important to sort out its geographical logistics so as to meet worldwide demand. Acer is also in the process of building a $30m PC monitor plant in Wales, over five years, which will result in the creation of 1,000 jobs (CI No 3,312).
