Acer Inc. announced that revenue from the mainland China PC market was $187.5 million (NT$6 Billion) for year 2000, showing an increase of 200% compared to 1999. The total PC shipment for year 2000 reached 240,000 units, representing an increase of 240% from 1999. This result greatly increases the possibilities for Acer to become a top five branded PC vendor in China. Acer Inc. forecasts a total shipment of 400,000 units this year, further positioning the company to forge ahead as one of the top three PC vendors in China.

Acer states that the total shipment of its branded desktop PCs reached 180,000 units last year, with notebook PCs reaching 51,000 units, representing a growth of 300% and 180% respectively in comparison to 1999. The exceptional demand for Acer branded PCs suggests Acer is in a strong position to be among the five leading PC vendors worldwide by year-end 2000.

A strategic marketing campaign, ‘Global Brand at a Local Price’, played a critical role in the success of Acer’s PC sales. Sales increased accordingly with the introduction of a series of product lines that offered attractive features at appealing prices. The result was a rise of Acer’s market share from 2% to more than 4%, spanning 80% of China’s major cities.

The company intend to build on the success already achieved. Scott Lin, GM of Acer Inc. in China, states, Acer will continue to focus on the commercial market by aggressively targeting major corporate accounts, providing eSolutions to small and medium sized companies, and building stronger distribution channels. We plan to set up 1000 retail stores in all of China’s major cities within this year, and increase the distribution network by opening 500 more stores each year.
