As the largest contractor for the National Health Service’s (NHS) 10-year IT project, which started two-and-a-half years ago, Accenture was responsible for installing computer systems in hospitals throughout the UK. The company has deployed over 80% of the systems already installed in the GBP6.2 billion program, in a contract worth roughly GBP2 billion.

Other contractors involved in the National Programme for IT scheme, which is touted as the world’s largest non-military IT program, include BT, Fujitsu and CSC. Accenture, however, had made the most progress, working on 19 of the 20 areas specified by the project. BT had made progress on 10 areas, CSC on five and Fujitsu on three.

The consultancy firm, which is reported to be negotiating a GBP100 million settlement, blamed its software subcontractor iSoft for delays and expected losses.
