Accenture secures NHS contract

Contract to manage NHSmail accounts is worth £350 million.

The Health and Social Care Information Centre has selected Accenture as its preferred bidder for a 2 year, £350 million ‘NHSmail2’ contract.

NHSmail, which has around 730,000 active users and almost a million registered accounts, has been running on Microsoft’s Exhange platform since 2009.

It won the competitive bid over rivals BT, CSC, GDIT and Vodafone.

Accenture has yet to confirm which IT system it will be using.

The Department of Health had previously stated that it was seeking a solution which could provide cloud computing email providers through the G-Cloud framework.

The NHSmail program was set up to provide NHS staff with a secure email address that allowed them to share sensitive patient data.

Users will be migrated to the new service throughout 2015-16.
