According to a survey by IDC, 43% of agencies in the government sector in Western Europe have adopted some form of social media.
The study conducted a survey on government IT and non-IT executives in France, Germany, Italy, Spain and the UK. IDC found that about 21% of local government and 18% of central government executives, however, have not yet adopted social media.
The respondents that weren’t using social media said that they are planning to adopt it over the coming two years.
Nearly 75% of respondents in the central government sector said that they are planning to adopt social media for collaboration with citizens, especially in countries like France, Germany, and Italy.
IDC EMEA Government Insights research manager, Silvia Piai said, "Western European government executives must empower employees to test use cases that align with key business objectives because social media has very low entry points in terms of investment and end-user skills, thus a trial-and-error process can generate better benefits."
The survey found that the paucity of resources and competencies to deal with social media is still a barrier for social media adoption, particularly among central government IT executives.
