ABBEY MICROSYSTEMS INTRODUCES BATTERY POWERED LAPTOP COMPUTER

Abbey Microsystems Ltd, Aylesbury, Buckinghamshire, has introduced a 12MHz, 80286-based, battery powered laptop computer, it comes with 1Mb of memory as standard which can be extended to 4Mb without using any of the expansion slots, a 20Mb hard disk, a 1.44Mb 3.5 floppy drive and weighs 16lbs; manufactured by the Modern Computer Company in Taiwan the Abbey Laptop 286/4 costs UKP2,700 and employs cold cathode fluorescent tube technology which the company says gives it a sharp black-on-white display – but the company was unable to explain what this – a solid state or an electron gun technology – nor say who makes the display; Abbey was established 12 months ago and sells a range of portable computers through the UK.
