All those of you whose desire for streetcars is insatiable Londoners, New Yorkers, Parisians – who arrive in a continental city and say with a sigh of pleasure Ah, they have trams! will have mixed feelings about the news from Berne in Switzerland reported in the Daily Telegraph City Diary that one of the trams there has been fitted with a cellular pay telephone – just 20 pence a minute for local calls: if trams are up to date enough to have cellular phones in them, they must be a thoroughly modern form of public transport – so why can’t we have trams here?
