A NEW NOVELL WILL EMERGE AFTER SUMMER, SAYS SCHMIDT

By CBR Staff Writer

Novell Inc chief executive officer Eric Schmidt says he’ll recruit a couple of new executives to replace president and chief operating officer Joe Marengi who resigned last week (CI No 3,177) but will keep the majority of the senior team below Marengi. Just what kind of a company will emerge from the restructuring won’t become clear until at the end of the summer when Schmidt has also worked through the company’s technology and product strategy processes and marketing messages. While the company’s current business is largely dedicated to selling to and servicing a well-established installed base, Schmidt expects to begin to expand the installed base with a range of new IP internet protocol products rather than with Novell’s proprietary SPX protocol.
