880 FEWER STAFF AT WANG

By CBR Staff Writer

It is turning out to be a long and dour struggle revitalising Wang Laboratories Inc, and the Lowell firm says that its workforce has fallen by about 880 people over the past three months, the cuts achieved mainly by not replacing people that have left, although 180 customer services staff were laid off last week. The company has had a hiring frost, not a total freeze from November, it said, noting that its workforce had fallen by about 2.2% to 30,700 in the first two months of 1989. Wang is also reportedly considering a writedown of some of its unprofitable assets according to the Boston Globe, but Wang declined to comment on that report.
