87% of British adults now online – report

Office for National Statistics survey finds a million more people online than last year.

By Joe Curtis

The number of UK internet users has grown by more than one million over the last year and now totals 87% of the population, according to the Office of National Statistics.

The total number of people aged over 16 that have used the web grew to 44.6 million people, show the body’s latest statistics recorded in the first quarter of the year.

The figure represents a jump of 1.1 million since the data was last recorded in the first quarter of 2013, and also demonstrated a drop of 659,000 in the number of people who have never used the web – which stood at 6.4 million adults (13%) in Q1 2013.

While 99% of 16-24-year-olds have surfed the web, just 37% of adults aged 75 and older told the ONS that they have been online.

Meanwhile, proportionally more men use the internet than women, with 89% of men going online compared to 84% of women.
While 90% of Londoners are connected to the web, the highest proportion in the UK, Northern Ireland came bottom with 79%.

An ONS spokesperson said:"While there is a clear pattern of increased internet usage across the country in recent years, there are still some groups whose use remains noticeably lower, such as the elderly and disabled."
