MFS Communications Co’s takeover of Internet provider UUNet Technologies Inc last Tuesday (CI No. 2,904) illustrates a trend that may result in the demise of 80% of all Internet vendors and service providers within two years, according to The Gartner Group. An analyst at the Connecticut-based company told Computergram small firms will be swallowed up by larger companies and most likely survivors will be those focussing on electronic commerce rather than consumer services.
