8 UK versus US interesting stats on Cyber Monday for retailers

Revenue per session is up and retailers are getting more efficient.

Monetate, a provider of web personalisation technology, reveals the latest findings on online shoppers worldwide after viewing close to 50 million shopping sessions on Cyber Monday.

1. Traffic is on the rise

The number of visitors to online retailers went up by 11.8% from the same period in 2013, while total page views rose by 38.1%. Total online sessions increased by 23.1% on 2013.

2. Retailers are getting more efficient

Conversion rates measure the proportion of visitors to a retail outlet who make a purchase. These have risen by 5.3% from last year.

3. Revenue per session is up

The average revenue per session rose 7% in from 2013 but the average order value (AOV) on transactions was down by 1.9%.

4. Smartphones are changing shopping habits:

Traffic from smartphones has gone up by 57% from 2013 from the same period last year as revenues rose by 18.7%. Conversion rates on smartphones has dipped from 2013, down by 6.1%, which suggests people are using their phones to browse, rather than buy, according to the report.

5. Traditional is still king for shoppers

The AOV for smartphones was $99.99, while traditional devices had an AOV of $148.83. Tablets are catching up quickly though with the average transaction at $145.42.

6. US v UK Comparison

The US saw traffic increase of 11.8% compared to 20.8% in the UK. Conversion rates were also up by 8.3% in the US from last year compared to 7% in the UK. And total page views increased by 38.1% in the US as the UK saw an even greater increase of 39.8%.
