Oracle Corp is readying a 64-bit version of Oracle8 for Siemens Nixdorf Informationssystemes AG’s MIPS-based Unix servers but isn’t saying when exactly it will hit the streets. It already offers a 64-bit version of Oracle7 for Silicon Graphics Inc’s Irix systems and is working with SGI on release plans for an Oracle8 cut now on the runway. It’s offers 64-bit Oracle7 for NEC’s 64-bit MIPS servers but has no plans to put Oracle8 on the platform at the moment, raising further speculation about NEC’s continued dalliance with the MIPS chip for its commercial server requirement.
