Bay Networks Inc has announced that it is backing the Rockwell- Lucent K56flex modem technology, following its endorsement by Compaq Computer Corp, Hayes Microcomputer Products and Cisco Systems Inc last month (CI No 3,076, 3,085). According to the company, the 56 Kbps Smart56 technology residing on its BayDSP digital modem systems will be fully interoperable with modems supporting the Rockwell-Lucent K56flex technology. Bay Networks’ Model 5399 Remote Access Concentrator Module, using the BayDSP high-density, digital signal processor-based digital modem is expected to ship in the second quarter of 1997. Meanwhile, Cisco Systems Inc is to deliver free 56Kbps technology upgrades on all new purchases of its AS5200 universal access server, made after February 1, 1997. The upgrade will enable the servers to establish connections of 56Kbps with modems that also feature this high-speed capability. At the same time, Cisco cut prices for the AS5200 by 25%. US pricing now starts at $28,100 with 48 integrated managed modems and Cisco IOS software for IP routing. Existing AS5200 customers will be charged for the upgrade. First shipments are expected in the summer.
