3M, OPTIMEM, CYGNET HAVE FURTHER YEAR TO MATCH SONY SYSTEM

By CBR Staff Writer

The US Patent & Trademark Office is going to have to wait another year for its optical electronic filing system: following the Congressional furore over the business going to Sony Corp (CI No 730), Sony will now get only $908,000 of the $40m or so award, and the US optical disk file system builders – 3M, Optimem, Cygnet – have another year to prove they can match the Sony system; if they do, the job may go to tender again, if not, Sony will walk away with the business anyway.
