3Com Corp yesterday announced expansion of its Asynchronous Transfer Mode efforts with the planned acquisition – for $58.5m cash – of NiceCom Ltd, a subsidiary of Nice Systems Ltd, Tel Aviv, Israel. 3Com wants the company to strengthen its Asynchronous Mode development efforts and sees it as an important building block for its High Performance Scalable Networking architecture. The entire purchase price is expected to be taken as a charge against figures for this quarter. NiceCom is focused on integration of local net and Asynchronous Mode switching and last month became the first to introduce a comprehensive Ethernet-Asynchronous Mode product line with the NiCell line.
