Palm Computing Inc the handheld division of Santa Clara, California-based 3Com Corp, is to release the latest version of its PalmPilot organizer next month. The PalmPilot III X has 4Mb of RAM and a reduced-reflection screen to improve text legibility. The release comes as 3Com tries to consolidate its position as personal digital assistant market leader in the face of Windows CE-based PDA releases from companies such as Hewlett-Packard Co. The Palm III X will also carry a Microsoft Outlook conduit, to provide compatibility with MS Outlook email without the need for third-party synchronization products. The version is reportedly due February 23, and will retail for around $369. It is expected the price of the Palm III, introduced last March, will be lowered to $299 as a result. 3Com’s Razor product, the Palm V that was delayed in November 1998 after the defection from Palm of three senior staff, is likely to be released soon after.
