3COM TEAMS WITH MICROSOFT ON OS/2 LAN MANAGER

By CBR Staff Writer

3Com Corp has decided to join forces with Microsoft Corp to enhance and extend the OS/2 LAN Manager networked version of the OS/2 operating system launched by Microsoft in April (CI No 662). Microsoft said that OS/2 LAN would enable micros running either MS OS/2 or MS-DOS to be linked in a network in which any computer could act either as a workstation or a server. Under the agreement with Microsoft, 3Com Corp will develop support for various protocols, compatibility with popular local area networking boards, and additional network functionality. OS/2 LAN Manager is set to be delivered to developers in the fourth quarter and Microsoft and 3Com will begin marketing it in the first half of 1988. Microsoft will sell it OEM to manufacturers while 3Com will sell it to dealers.
