Palm Computing Inc, a subsidiary of 3Com Corp, yesterday announced the shipment of version 5.0, its CodeWarrior development environment for handheld computing devices that run on the Palm operating system. CodeWarrior, which the company acquired exclusive rights to from Metrowerks in September, is an integrated set of development tools that enable programmers to write applications on the Palm OS. Devices that utilize the palm platform include 3Com’s Palm III and PalmPilot, IBM’s WorkPad PC Companion and the SPT 1500 device from Symbol Technologies. 3Com said that Release 5.0 of the software would enable programmers to take advantage of the enhanced infrared (IrDA) support in the Palm OS software and the bar code scanner in the Symbol SPT 1500 device. CodeWarrior Release 5.0 is priced at $369 for an annual subscription, which includes the next upgrade for free. Renewals cost $269. The software is also available through existing Metrowerks distribution channels.
