Santa Clara, California-based 3Com Corp is expanding its local network hub offerings with the acquisition of Star-Tek Inc, for which it plans to pay about $48.5m in new shares. Star-Tek, Northborough, Massachusetts, makes Token Ring hubs aimed mainly at larger companies with IBM Corp mainframe, mid-range and Token Ring local network-based systems. 3Com says that the acquisition, to be completed this month, will be non-dilutive of its profits – apart from fiscal third quarter acquisition costs. Star-Tek is privately held and was founded in 1985. Its 1992 turnover is estimated at $20m. 3Com says the purchase reinforces its commitment to IBM networking.
