Figures compiled by Romtec Plc, Maidenhead from the returns of 350 personal computer dealers indicate that in the January-to-May period, IBM took 24% of the market by units – up from 23% for all of 1988; Amstrad Plc’s share fell to 16% from 20%; Compaq jumped to 14% from 11%; Apple progressed a point to 7%; Apricot was static at 7%; Toshiba gained a point to 5%; Tandon remained at 4%; Olivetti dipped below 3% having taken 4% of the market by units in 1988, and Zenith advanced a point to 4%; the average end user discounts on the list prices recorded were 20% for IBM, 6% for Amstrad, 17% for Compaq, 16% for Apple, 7% for Apricot, 20% for Toshiba, 7% for Tandon, 16% for Zenith.
