The European research body, EUREKA, has launched the $2.5b MEDEA program, which aims to make European semiconductor technologies more competitive and to help chipmakers speed up with US and Japanese progress. The project, which kicks off in 1997, is funded by the European Union and will promote advanced semiconductor technologies in areas including multimedia and communicaitons.
