22 TELECOMMUNICATIONS ADMINISTRATIONS SIGN AGREEMENT FOR THE H-J-K CABLE

Kokusai Denshin Denwa Co Ltd, Cable & Wireless (Hong Kong) Ltd, Korea Telecommunication Authority, AT&T Co and Telecommunication Authority of Singapore yesterday saw the fruits of two years’ preparatory work on the laying of the H-J-K Cable System submarine fibre optic cable that will link Hong Kong with Japan and Japan with South Korea, as 22 telecommunications administrations signed the construction and maintenance agreement for the cable: the $162m contract has gone to Fujitsu Ltd as main contractor with NEC Corp, AT&T and Cable & Wireless (Marine) as subcontractors; the cable is due to go into service in May 1990, and will send at 140Mbps, doublable to 280Mbps, over its 2,857 mile length; Cable & Wireless will put up $50m for a 30% stake in the H-J-K Cable System.
