2015 to see 235 billion app downloads

Juniper suggests 2015 will see around 30 app downloads for every human being.

By Alexander Sword

2015 will see more than 235 billion app downloads globally, according to Juniper Research.

This rise of 28 percent will be driven largely by huge growth in the Chinese market, which accounted for 60 percent of worldwide downloads in 2014.

The report suggests that Google’s exclusion from the Chinese market has benefitted local app vendors, such as Baidu. China now accounts for five of the world’s seven leading app stores.

The UK came in fifth in terms of share of app downloads in 2014, accounting for 2 percent of the world’s figures, behind China, the US, South Korea and Germany.

In terms of app revenues, however, the US and Japan are still ahead of China; the US revenue per download is nine times higher than China, while in Japan it is 14 times.

Another key trend was the dominance of free downloads, with the report claiming that only just 1% of applications are now paid for at the point of download.
