The closure of Siemens AG’s plant in the North of England, announced Friday, is just another nail in the 16MB DRAM coffin, as manufacturers look to extricate themselves from the money losing market. Siemens has made it clear it will cut more DRAM manufacturing capacity if the current price slump continues and the 16Mb chip production unit it runs with IBM outside Paris may be the next for the chop. IBM said it is currently evaluating the future of its 16MB production with Siemens at the site, adding what everyone knows – the future is not in 16Mb manufacturing.
