There will be almost 100 million smart bank cards on issue in the UK by 2001 – at 26% the biggest market penetration in Europe, according to a survey by consultants Datamonitor. Germany will be closely behind with a 24% share followed by France with 19%. In the whole of Europe, it predicts that 382 million smart cards will be in issue by 2001.
