Almost 1000 web domains were deleted on Sunday when hackers penetrated servers belonging to outsourcing company Prohosting. Affected sites include Prime Star Television, Australian web design firm Toy Satellite and the Pentagon Ski Club. Some sites are already back on their feet. A few have brief notes explaining the incident and promising full service in a few days, but the rest were still inaccessible Monday afternoon. The incident was triggered by an unorganized group of hackers who tried to change the MilW0rm.com web page, home to the hacker group most famous for gaining access to India’s Bhadha Atomic Research Center in June (CI No 3,426). Once the MilW0rm domain had been cracked, other hackers launched attacks on Prohosting. At the height of the incident, twelve hackers are believed to have gained root access to Prohosting’s servers. One of these, identified by hacker site AntiOnline as 16 year old DeathCraze, deleted the entire contents of the server. This action brought down the thousand domains. According to AntiOnline founder John Vranesevich, who conducted a telephone interview with five of those involved, the other hackers disapprove of DeathCraze’s destructive behavior. That guy crossed the line, said one, what he did isn’t cool.
