"Just setting up my twttr" Twitter co-founder, Jack Dorsey, first tweeted six years ago from a service that many people did not know. Now the site the site has over 100 million of active users sending over 250 million tweets per day.
Twitter, which was used to organise protests during the Arab Spring, has seen substantial growth over the last years, with the site being valued at about $10bn over a year ago.
According to The Next Web, Twitter took 3 years to reach its first billion tweets and 18 months for half a million users to register.
The site is now number 8 in the U.S and ranks 9th in the world, according to Alexia.com.
Just this month Twitter acquired the blogging service Posterous and let’s not forget the hefty $300m investment from Prince Alwaleed bin Talal.
Twitter has definitely established itself as a big player on the social media scene and with statistics showing that Twitter averages 23.6 million unique monthly visitors, the site looks like it will be celebrating many more birthdays to come.
