Marks and Spencer (M&S) today reported it has suffered another Christmas of declining clothing sales.
The retailer said like-for-like sales in the three months to the end of December were down 2.1%.
But there was a strong performance from its food business division during the Christmas period, with online revenue jumping 22.7% and food up 1.6% during the trading period.
M&S put the growth down to more consumers turning to M&S.com, with food orders from smartphones up 80% and tablets up 100%.
Rival Tesco also said its website had seen a 14% rise in the number of UK online sales over Christmas, with revenue reaching £450m.
Meanwhile, grocery sales were down for Morrisons, which reported a 5.6% drop in like-for-like sales. The retailer said its "disappointing" performance was driven by a lack of online presence.
