Indian services company Wipro Infotech is exploring how it can offer a subscription-based carbon accounting tool on a software-as-a-service (SaaS) basis.

Many governments are taking steps to reduce Green House Gas (GHG) emissions through national policies, and Wipro expects companies are wanting to better understand and manage their GHG risks so as to be prepared for future national or regional climate policies.

Currently, the company believes most enterprises manage their GHG emission inventory using Microsoft Excel based tools, which makes it very difficult to consolidate information from various parts of the organisation.

Wipro’s carbon accounting tool, known as Hara, provides a variety of customisable score cards and reports for the monitoring of emission intensities and KPIs.

It could also be used to generate reports for registries like Carbon Disclosure Project, WWF and the US EPA Climate Leaders.

Once an organisation accurately measures its emissions, it can start to manage and maintain its emission inventory. Ultimately, it could look to purchase carbon offsets to meet industry standards for emissions, or tie in with carbon exchanges to trade offsets generated by other carbon projects, the company said.

The Mumbai-based services vendor has also said it will open the doors to a new 300-seat application management support centre in Hyderabad, to add to the one it already runs out of Mysore.

The centre will concentrate on the support of ERP, Microsoft, Java and Oracle applications.
