Ebay has hinted that it could soon be integrating Bitcoin with its Paypal payment platform, saying that the virtual currency will play a greater role in the coming days.

EBay chief John Donahoe told CNBC, "We’re going to have to integrate digital currencies in our wallet."

"I think there’s no doubt digital currency is going to play an important role going forward, and at PayPal, we’re going to have to integrate digital currencies into our wallet," Donahue added.

Donahoe however said the integration will happen slowly and will not be rolled out to across its services immediately. It will start with peer-to-peer transactions and international transactions which will later be expanded further with merchants accepting payments in bitcoin.

"I don’t know how big it will get, how quickly, but I do think the underlying theme is [that] a digital currency is something we’re aware of and something we’re going to pay attention to," Donahoe said.

He however did not say when the currency will be accepted as a payment method.

"I think there are two sides of it, the investment side and the digital currency side."

"I’m more interested in the digital currency side about how you and I can exchange value seamlessly using technology."
