The CEO of Snapchat, it has emerged, turned down a $3bn takeover offer from Mark Zuckerberg’s Facebook.
That’s three times the amount the social networking site paid for Instagram, and is a sign that Zuckerberg fears the rise of the whimsical family of apps to which Snapchat belongs.
The theory goes that teenagers are shunning Facebook to share pictures and videos with groups of friends, rather than posting stuff on their social network profile for all to see.
Some contend the facts don’t bear that thinking out, with the same age group using Snapchat still checking Facebook regularly, but it’s clear the cute little ghost is keeping Zuckerberg and co up at night.
A lot of people are slightly confused that Facebook sees the photo-sharing app as that much of a threat, but the size of the offer speaks for itself.
It’s an interesting one to watch and see whether people continue to be satisfied with Snapchat’s snazzy tech and simple idea.
