While some of this can be figured out by simply playing and experimenting with different programming languages and deciding what you enjoying using the most, it should also be influenced by what is in highest demand and what are the most popular languages in the market.
According to 2016 data from Packt, the most popular language in both the US and the UK is Pyhton Machine Learning, but that’s where the similarities end between the two countries.
Node.js is the second most popular programming language in the UK but only number 11 in the UK, while Responsive Web Design ranks as fourth most popular in the US but second most popular in the UK.
C#6 and .NET core are the third and fourth most popular languages in the US and UK respectively, while React JS is the third most popular language in the UK but clearly not that popular in the US as it only comes in at number 12.
To add some further detail to this, Python makes up 14% of worldwide sales while React.js and Node.js make up only 0.6% and 1.7% respectively. In the US Python makes up 12% of sales and only 10% in the UK.
