Oracle has introduced a new version of web application tool Application Express, which it claims to streamline the development of database-centric web applications.

The company claims that the Application Express Release 4.0, which is included with all editions of Oracle Database 11g, helps reduce the time and complexity of building Web 2.0 applications and reports.

According to Oracle, the new version includes Dynamic Actions feature that allows developers to declaratively incorporate client-side processes, alleviating the need to learn JavaScript and AJAX to provide a Web 2.0 user experience. It also includes plug-ins that extend the development environment, enabling developers to incorporate custom components.

The new version of Application Express allows developers to build and deploy professional applications for Oracle Databases that are both fast and secure, Oracle said.

In addition, the new offering features RESTful Web Services that enables integration with RESTful Web services via a declarative interface, and Websheets that provides a way to integrate and share content and data on the web.

Dennis Vanill, senior manager for software development at PAETEC, said: "We are eager to begin leveraging several of the new and enhanced features available within Oracle Application Express 4.0 designed to help facilitate larger team development. We are particularly excited about the ability to create dynamic actions and plug-ins to easily extend the functionality of the tool.

"Additionally, we hope to drive efficiencies within our development organisation by leveraging the integrated project management, feedback and bug tracking features built inside the tool."
