Microsoft said it would send pop-up warnings to notify Windows XP users that the company will end technical and security support for its 12-year old operating system.

The company will no longer provide security patches for XP, which powers the majority of modern cash registers, point-of-sale (POS) devices and ATMs, as of April 8 this year, and many companies are slow on migrating to a new OS.

In a bid to facilitate easy migration from XP to latest the latest OS, Microsoft said the free tool allows users to tailor what they want i the new machine over their home or office networks.

Developed in collaboration with Laplink, Microsoft’s new PCmover Express for Windows XP copies users’ files and settings from an XP powered machine to a new machine powered by Windows 7, Windows 8 or Windows 8.1.

Laplink is also offering its paid PCmover Professional software that assists in migrating apps, which will be offered in English later this week.

Reports reveal that Windows XP OS is expected to run on around 600 million PCs across the globe.
