MariaDB is targeting the acceleration of open source database management system deployments and improved security for DevOps with its Summer 2015 release.
This release includes a number of enhancements in the areas of DevOps and tools such as Docker Containers, Chef Recipes and Cookbooks.
The company says that the latest solution shows a 15-20% improvement in performance, compared with other databases. Despite this, its main competitor MySQL, still holds a strong position in the market thanks to its strong customer support.
Oracle’s MySQL has seen a significant number of companies switch from to MariaDB in recent years, including Red Hat, SUSE, Wikipedia and Google.
The non-friendly open source approach from Oracle appears to be significantly hindering the company in this market as its open source competitors grow in adoption.
One of the reported benefits of MariaDB is its stability and performance over developing fancy new features. With this in mind, the company has integrated MaxScale, designed to allow companies to split the application and database layers.
MaxScale, a database-aware proxy platform provides capabilities such as load balancing, sharding and firewall protection.
The subscription based MariaDB Enterprise, includes server binaries which are based on its open source community server.
