Hortonworks has announced a number of upgrades to its Apache Hadoop offering which are designed to make Hadoop ubiquitous across enterprises.

The advancements include Consistent Operations, which will allow for automated cloud provisioning and elastic scaling. This is born from the acquisition of SequenceIQ which will assist in the quick deployment of tools for launching Hadoop clusters.

Also included are automated rolling upgrades and the centralised management of health alerts and metrics, which is made available through Ambari 2.0.

Rob Bearden, CEO of Hortonworks, said: "The first decade of Hadoop’s existence was focused on solidifying the core to become the foundation of a centralized data architecture."

"It’s clear that Hadoop has won that battle and is transforming every industry. Now the focus shifts towards accelerating the utilization of Hadoop to become ubiquitous across enterprises."

"That means making Hadoop easier to consume for multiple audiences while addressing operational, security and governance needs using the same open approach that our partners and customers expect."

Additional improvements come in the form of simplifying the set up of authentication through Kerberos, improved governance with the addition of engineers from JP Morgan Chase and a proposed data governance project, Apache Atlas.

To round off the improvements, Hadoop has also improved its developer experience by adding visual query performance analysis tools, which is also available through Ambari 2.0.

Randy Guard, SAS Vice President of Product Management, said: "We are seeing broad adoption of Hadoop to solve business problems and as it becomes more universal there are increased requirements for security, operations and data governance capabilities."

"It’s exciting to see these enterprise capabilities come to market through open source, community driven efforts. We are eager to continue working with Hortonworks to extend enterprise capabilities to our customers."
