A group of Silicon Valley giants have chosen sides in the heated patent battle between Samsung and Apple, with the likes of eBay, HP, Dell, Facebook and Google siding with the South Korean multinational.
A motion has been filed by the coalition to the US Federal Circuit Court of Appeals which supports Samsung’s appeal over damaged to alleged patent infringement.
The main point that the group raises is that the ruling would have: "significant detrimental consequences for the continued development of useful modern technologies." Clearly these companies have an idea of tech for the greater good.
Apple and Samsung have been locked in legal battles around the world for the past three years regarding suits of patent infringement.
While it was agreed last year that all patent lawsuits outside of the US would be ended, the hefty sums awarded in US trials could total near $3bn.
It is argued by the coalition that the design patents only covered minor features, such as pinch to zoom which is now a common feature of smartphones.
The coalition said: "If allowed to stand, that decision will lead to absurd results and have a devastating impact on companies who spend billions of dollars annually on research and development for complex technologies and their components."
Apple has unsurprisingly argued that the support of other companies should be ignored, particularly as Google is the developer of Android, which Samsung smartphones and tablets run.
