The ‘Groups for Schools‘ will allow students to share notes, schedules and assignments. Users with an active email address at specific schools and universities will be able to join groups for their chosen area or extracurricular activities.
The feature will gradually be rolled out to school and universities worldwide.
Group members will be able to upload and share files, up to 25MB in size.
According to Facebook engineer Michael Novati, Groups for Schools is an easy way to see what is happening on campus.
"You can join a group for your major to discuss classes, for your sorority to plan upcoming events, or for your dorm to share photos, Novati said about the new product. "We are also introducing file sharing for these groups, to make it even easier to share lecture notes, sports schedules or class assignments."
Facebook’s venture into the educational sector comes as the company is due to make an initial public offering (IPO) next month with the company valuing at $100bn.
