Citrix Systems has unveiled a new edition of CloudStack, which will support both VMware vSphere and Oracle VM hypervisors, enabling VMware and Oracle customers to manage their virtualised servers as a highly available, scalable cloud computing environment.

Citrix said its free and open source cloud infrastructure platform helps providers of all types deploy and manage simple, cost-effective cloud services that are scalable, secure, and open by design.

The company claims that CloudStack provides customers with the fastest path to the cloud by providing the most advanced software technologies for building highly scalable, highly reliable cloud computing environments.

CloudStack helps enterprises deliver multi-tier, multi-tenant services by providing a powerful, hypervisor-agnostic offering designed to help them build clouds in a simple, automated, elastic, scalable and efficient manner.

It features advanced networking capabilities, high-availability and a robust web interface to give users complete control of their cloud infrastructure through a single pane of glass, the company said.

Citrix CloudStack allows users to preserve their existing virtualisation investments, and helps VMware customers to break free from the proprietary costs that VMware imposes and gain the added flexibility and control.

CloudStack supports multiple hypervisors in the same cloud to enable VMware customers mix and match their virtualisation technologies under the same cloud environment and optimise their costs.

Citrix said this latest release of CloudStack is a continuation of its efforts to provide VMware customers with an open source choice when building clouds on vSphere.

Citrix vice president of product marketing, cloud platforms group, Peder Ulander said by enhancing availability and support for VMware vSphere and Oracle VM, the latest release of Citrix CloudStack enables customers to build clouds on their existing virtualisation and datacentre technologies while taking advantage of the most widely deployed open source cloud platform today.
