Apple has acquired FoundationDB, a company which specialises in the development of a database technology which can store large amounts of data very quickly.
The company has developed a database technology that combines the advantages of modern NoSQL databases with the power and reliability of ACID transactions, the company said.
FoundationDB’s technology is claimed to allow the storage of many types of data in a single database, helping companies to focus on problems rather than building their data stack.
Both companies have not yet disclosed details of the deal.
In the community page, the company wrote, "Thank you for your support of FoundationDB over the last five years."
"We have made the decision to evolve our company mission and, as of today, we will no longer offer downloads."
An Apple spokeswoman has also confirmed the deal.
In a statement she told Wall Street Journal: "Apple buys smaller technology companies from time to time, and we generally do not discuss our purpose or plans."
